SALARY: $43,724 to $61,213 Annually

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

Performs technical duties in the field of arboriculture and general forestry work to maintain the health, safety, and aesthetics of public trees in the City of Cheyenne. Responds to tree-related hazards, emergencies, andstorm events, some of which may occur outside a normal work schedule. Proficiently and safely operate vehicles, equipment, and tools in support of tree maintenance and tree planting.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform skilled level work in the following activities pertaining to trees and shrubs: Pruning, removing, stump grinding, planting, spraying or injecting insecticide into tree trunks, injecting soil systemic insecticides, injecting soil fertilizers, spraying herbicides for weed and grass control, watering using gravity flow or pump powered water tanks installed in trucks and the 4500-gallon tanker trailer, mulching the soil around young trees, and preparing planting sites for trees and shrubs.
  • Operate equipment used in urban forestry maintenance, including chainsaws, stump grinder, aerial bucket trucks, grapple loader, dump trucks, brush chipper, hydraulic sprayer, front-end loader/backhoe mini skid steer loader, 4500-gallon tanker trailer/truck, other landscaping items and various hydraulic tools.
  • Climbs trees to perform maintenance using industry accepted rope and saddle techniques.
  • Trained in proper pruning techniques following guidelines within Arboriculture Best Management Practices.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, minor maintenance, and routine safety inspections on forestry equipment.
  • Install cones and signs to caution or exclude the public prior to the performance of tree work affecting city streets, sidewalks, and other public access areas. Ensure safety of public around the work area.
  • Maintain productivity logs, vehicle logs, and records as needed by management.
  • Inspect trees and shrubs for insects, disease, or other health and safety problems while doing routine maintenance on the tree or shrub.
  • Carry the forestry on-call cell phone, when required, and report to problem site(s) and mitigate on-call requests as needed within one hour after call-out.
  • Inventory trees on City lands and within the public right-of-way using Tree Plotter
  • Periodically check drip irrigation systems to insure proper watering rates for trees and shrubs.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform or assist in job duties performed by the Forestry Division during special events or on a non-routine basis.
  • Available as needed to respond to tree emergencies during regular work hours and after hours.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner and/or direct them to someone immediately that can respond to the inquiry.
  • Respect the rules and regulations of other divisions while working in their jurisdiction.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Strong knowledge and experience relating to all aspects of arboriculture in the urban forest environment, including tree planting, pruning, removal, watering, mulching, and herbicide/insecticide application.
  • Strong manual dexterity skills to operate maintenance tools including but not limited to chain saws, hand saws, pole and hand pruners, shovels, rakes, leaf blowers, and pesticide sprayers.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information, both verbally and in writing, to support organizational objectives and interact with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive and cooperative manner.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and judgment and make decisions within the scope of assigned authority.
  • Ability to acquire necessary credits to maintain required licenses and certifications.
  • Ability to work scheduled and nonscheduled overtime.
  • Ability to participate in programs such as Arbor Day, and Rooted in Cheyenne planting events and other urban forestry community programs.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and use good judgment in all situations.
  • Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions and report verbally or in written form to supervisors.
  • Ability to assign and inspect the work of seasonal employees and volunteers
  • Ability to work as a team member with other employees to maximize both the quantity and quality of work produced.
  • Ability to inspect, service and maintain assigned equipment and tools to insure they are in safe working condition and make minor adjustments and repairs when necessary.
  • Ability to use Tree Plotter to update tree fields and log maintenance activities.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred:
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in urban forestry, forestry, horticulture, or other closely related field of study.
Certifications and Licenses

Required at time of hire: OR able to obtain within one (1) year of hire:
  • Wyoming Commercial Driver's License Class A or Class B.
  • International Society of Arboriculture Arborist Certification.
Preferred:
  • Wyoming Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicators license.
  • First Aid Certification
  • CPR Certification


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain the physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, tree climbing, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 80 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Working Environment:

Outdoor working environment with exposure to low to high noise levels, slippery, uneven surfaces, dust, toxic chemicals, and inclement weather conditions. Requires working in confined spaces, along streets and amongst traffic and up to 75 ft. off the ground.
